Diamond-shaped ceramic anilox rollers are a type of ceramic anilox roller in which the cells (ink-storage cavities) on the surface are arranged in a diamond pattern. They fall into two main categories: the traditional 45° diamond and the improved diamond half-wall (or interconnected) cell design, the latter offering clear advantages in preventing cell clogging and improving ink transfer efficiency.

Traditional 45°Diamond Cells

Strength and Stability: During high-speed printing or coating processes, the anilox roller needs to withstand significant squeezing and frictional forces. Seamless steel tubes (especially 45# medium carbon steel) possess ideal strength and bending stiffness, ensuring that the roller body remains undeformed under pressure, which is crucial for maintaining precise ink transfer.

This was the cell pattern commonly used in early metal anilox rollers and was later adopted for ceramic rollers.

Characteristics: The cell walls are usually relatively thick (about 15–20 μm), with large nodes between cells. To achieve a given ink volume, the cells often need to be engraved deeper.

Limitations: This structure is not conducive to ink transfer and tends to cause ink to become trapped at the bottom of the cells, making cleaning difficult. It is therefore not well suited to printing high-quality color work. It is currently used mainly in UV coating or general coating applications.

Improved Diamond Cells (Half-Wall / Interconnected)

To overcome the drawbacks of the traditional diamond pattern, various improved designs have emerged in recent years, all centered on opening up the closed cell walls so that ink can flow between cells.

Structural principle: By incorporating half-height walls or interconnected cells, channels are formed between adjacent diamond cells, allowing ink to circulate. Ink is stored not only within the cells but also flows between the walls.

Key advantages: This structure significantly reduces clogging, ink spitting, and doctor-blade lines, making it especially suitable for printing with UV inks and high-definition preprint products. At the same cell count, it has a lower wall ratio, giving it greater ink volume and better ink transfer performance.

High-line-count potential: The improved diamond half-wall cells can achieve very high engraving precision, for example up to 1500 LPI (lines per inch).

Application of anilox rollers

*Traditional 45° diamond: Used mainly for UV coating, coating, or applications where film uniformity requirements are not critical.

*Improved diamond (half-wall / interconnected): Suitable for flexographic printing and high-definition preprint printing, especially with UV inks, where it effectively prevents cell *Clogging. It is also commonly used in coating and gluing processes.
