In commercial rotogravure-used for furniture foil, laminate flooring, and decorative paper-the roller is strictly metal, but it is "wooden" in pattern. The manufacturing process uses actual solid wood as the master template.
*Core Material: High-grade seamless steel tube, plated with copper for engraving and hard chrome for durability.
*The "Wooden" Aspect: Manufacturers select physical wood boards (e.g., cherry, oak) as the original artwork. These boards are scanned at ultra-high resolutions (up to 2000 dpi) to capture every fiber and pore .
*Result: The resulting metal cylinder prints a "wooden" image onto paper or vinyl.

Core Structure and Material
The manufacturing of wood grain printing rollers follows strict process standards to withstand high-speed printing and ensure the clarity of the wood grain texture:
*Base material: The roller body itself is made of seamless steel pipe, high-quality special steel, or alloy steel, ensuring stability and concentricity under high-intensity operation
*Surface treatment
A layer of copper is plated on the surface of the steel roller as the base layer for engraving patterns.
After copper plating, precise wood grain pits (ink-carrying holes) are engraved on the copper layer through electronic engraving or laser engraving.
After the engraving is completed, a layer of hard chromium is plated on the surface, making the roller surface hardness reach HRC 58-62, significantly enhancing wear resistance and corrosion resistance, and prolonging service life.
Main Classification and Application Scenarios
Based on the material and effect of the final product, it can be mainly divided into the following two types:
|
Name |
Core Process |
Printing/processing object |
Visual effects |
|
Gravure cylinder |
Ink transfer involves imprinting the wood grain pattern engraved on the roller surface onto the material surface through ink |
Flexible materials such as decorative paper, PVC film, and furniture veneer paper |
Rich in color and strong in layering, it can simulate delicate wood color gradients |
|
Embossing Roller |
Physical embossing involves directly pressing out three-dimensional patterns using the concave and convex textures on the roller surface, without the use of ink |
Medium density fiberboard, plastic wood board, leather, wallpaper, flooring, etc |
It has a three-dimensional tactile feel, with a concave-convex texture reminiscent of solid wood |
