The difference between anilox plate and printing plate

Nov 03, 2026

Anilox plates and printing plates are both essential components in the printing industry, each playing a unique and positive role in achieving vibrant and high-quality prints. Understanding their differences helps appreciate the precision and innovation behind modern printing technology.

**Anilox Plate:**
The anilox plate is a key component in flexographic printing, primarily responsible for transferring a measured amount of ink to the printing plate. It features a finely engraved surface with tiny cells that hold and deliver the ink uniformly. This precision ensures consistent ink distribution, resulting in sharp and colorful images. The anilox plate's ability to meter ink precisely makes it an invaluable tool for producing clean and crisp prints with excellent color control.

**Printing Plate:**
The printing plate, on the other hand, carries the actual image or design to be printed onto the substrate. It receives ink from the anilox roll and transfers the image directly to the material such as paper, cardboard, or plastic. Printing plates are crafted from various materials and technologies depending on the printing process, such as photopolymer plates in flexography or metal plates in offset printing. Their role is fundamental in defining the final appearance of the printed product, ensuring clarity, detail, and fidelity to the original design.
